Horreur des horreurs! Et ce brave homme - sauvé de la francmaçonnerié pendant ses derniers années par une bonne législation de François I - qui priait le chapelet avant de composer! Coûtume très louable pour les compositeurs, et un compositeur qui le pratiquait, c'est très peu probable, non ce n'est pas probable du tout par rapport des ses oeuves, qu'il en aurait apprécié l'usage fait aujourd'hui dans le Théâtre du Rond-Point!*

I was yesterday evening looking into the overtone implications of suggested (non-conventional) scale. And oh, what many overtones from diverse chord tones that were just one or two or four apart in the proportion. Not really a good idea, as there were fewer overtone coincidences.

There are Traditional or Byzantine Catholics of English origin who seem to have been shocked by this song. OK, it translates as:

"Come by here, my Lord, come by here! Come by here! Come by here!"

Gullah happens to be a dialect of English, or of a West African language using its own grammar but English words (and some Portuguese). In Gullah "Come by here" comes out as "kum ba ya".

Gullah is not a Liturgic language, and Kum ba ya is not a strictly Liturgic song. But people outside the Church have used Gullah as a worship language and have worshipped God with the song Kum ba ya. Is it a sin to sing it, because it was first used outside the Church? How about "I am the Lord of the dance", then?

Of course, kum ba ya should not replace strictly liturgic words. But singing kum ba ya after mass or sacraments on occasions like baptism, marriage, funerals, or singing it at home or on occasions when one might sing "Laudate si, o mi signore" (praise of God through the creatures, "and first of all through mylord our brother sun", by St Francis) seems no problem at all, morally.

It does not replace liturgy, it does not replace theology, but it is a prayer. A prayer for God's tender presence, thus a confession one believes, basically, in the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

It also has a touch of Liturgy. It could be used by a choir not knowing the liturgic songs, between the benedictus and the consecration, because of the words "kum ba ya"="come by here". It has a series of human life situations, that is a miniature of the Byzantine Liturgy's lithanies in mass (for the clergy ... for the rulers of our nations ... for the sinners ... for the sick ... for the people on voyage ... in danger ... under persecution ...), and I think some Novus Ordo services with kum ba ya may have used it on offertory re-introduced litanies (I happen to think that "ad utilitatem quoque nostram" was a shortened version of the prayers as of Byzantine Liturgy).

This does not mean I favour the Liturgic change of 1969 as such (I paid my "tithes" - much less than ten % in France - to St Nicolas du Chardonnet today), but it means that to me "kum ba ya" does not qualify as a criterium of a mass being said in an unworthy manner. I want the priest to turn to the east though. And at least priest and mass servant to master the words of the Liturgy. And I want my priests to have ordinations from bishops consecrated under old form, if I can chose. But unlike some English trads, I am not against kum ba ya.

To me that song is a fond memory of the Lutheran services of Sweden. If they have no real sacramental presence of Our Lord, they do have - long after the reformation and along with many half-atheists without any faith (I seem to recall a Nietzsche admiring masonic "cultural Christian" from Norwegian news) - some devotion. And in the High Church/Broad Church parish I practised for a short while before deciding on conversion, borrowings from Catholic Mass and kum ba ya were both ok. To Swedes of course, there is another song which is also not written by "a Roman", but which also expresses the trust in the Sacred Heart of Jesus. If you ever meet a Swede who came from "Free Church" (Nonconformist) congregations, do ask about "Perleporten". And ask him to translate the first stanza - in Latin it would start "sicut fons divinitatis" for the first line.

Both songs are in melodies that some describe as tender (as I do, and find in context appropriate) and some find "musically not interesting" (as professional singers would say). Some would call them sentimental. Then again some would call much Catholic devotion sentimental - see the kind of protestantism that watered down to "free thought", for example. Or the kind of anticatholic argumentation of 17th C. and 18th C. devines (excepting methodists) that became the antichristian argumentation of "we understand the emotional value of religion, but we think it has nothing to do with objective truth" - quite what some Calvinists would say about Catholic religion. One can say that 18th C Viennese Classicism (a later term, some critics described Haydn and Mozart as the first Romantics, as did E T A Hoffmann) has a penchant for two things known from liturgy and devotional music: the repetition and then repetition with longer notes, as in the Greek liturgy on kyrie, and the cadence system and sequences one sees in miniature in - kum ba ya.

So, no, I do not require them two songs at mass, but I am not allergic to them either. In their proper place. And among protestants I have more hope for people singing that than for say - Dean Inge. I suppose readers of Chesterton know whom I mean.

Hope I have not offended too many English trads, but that is how it is. My Catholic Conversion was not about getting away from Avec vous toujours, avec vous ... (French song among Salvationists, one of first two songs I learnt in French, when taken to US to learn English and complaining about it not being French I was about to learn, melodically somewhat more miltary than other two), but of adding meaning to it, understanding that Matthew 28:18-20 - to which it refers - means that Our Lord Jesus Christ founded his Church as a people with a hierarchy, not as only individual plus individual. And of adding devotions such as Ave Maris Stella or Salve Regina. I learnt some basics of Christian Catechism by Bible and Mother in Vienna, and there was a Mary with Child in our apartment there. And a book where people who had said too much - one even sold his soul to the devil another treated with him - tended to get saved when confessing to Holy Hermits or by using the Sign of the Cross.

Is rock music "staccato lyrics" and more fun than profound?

Now, that would rather be Gilbert and Sullivan. They often put six to eight syllables in a measure, I got the impression, and they are more fun than profound.

Let us take the staccato lyrics first. There is one part or set of parts which obviously is staccato in rock, that is the drummer's instruments, the battery. Battery cannot well be legato, it has to be staccato. And in rock mostly one or other instrument of the battery is beating on each of the eight crotchets per measure.

But lyrics are often enough legato: "I can't believe the news todaaaaaayyyy" or "for I am your laaaadyyyy, and you are my maaaaaaaan: whenever you neeeeed for meee, I'll be there if I caaaaaaan" or "you can't start a fiiiiire, without a spaaark" though the latter also has "Booooorn in ! the ! U ! S ! A !" ...

All of above examples are trying to be more profound than Pirates of Penzance. Some of them succeed with me even now, some do not. As you know, I am no fan of Rolling Stones, but "I can't get ! no ! satisfac ! tion !" is not funny or superficial. Neither is the much better though very similar "We don't neeed no ! educaaation !"

If you want superficial, go Gilbert and Sullivan. Three Little Girls from School is as superficial as Cindy Lauper (I would not be surprised if she had heard and liked it) and the blessing of the soldiers in Pirates of Penzance is farcical pacifism just as much as Sunday Bloody Sunday is serious pacifism (if it is true that "This is not a rebel song").

So, I am not criticizing rock for being superficial. Indeed some rock I am condemning for not being superficial, but instead being seriously anti-Christian or hateful - but that is not what I listen to, even when it comes to rock. But if there is rock I do not criticize but appreciate, why am I not writing rock?

a) its rythmical complexity is beyond my sense of exact rythmical notation;
b) when I improvise melodies, I cannot write them down from hearing, when I write melodies, I do not know exactly how they sound, only if they are dissonant or consonant, major or minor or modal, fifth of chord or third of chord, homophone or polyphone style et c. and what exact rythm: rock as much as Church Music is vocal, and one does not fit just any melody to any words;
c) I feel that classical as in Baroque or close on and partly folk too has been neglected, not by listeners and musicians (or it would not pay to write any) but by composers after Ravel and Britten,
d) and one could make - I have been making - short classical forms adapted to the three minute format.

Bien, le terminus technicus de Schenker est déjà traduit, j'y reviens.

J'ai entendu la traduction "phrase originelle". Bien, non.

"Ur-" se traduit parfois "original" mais le sens exacte est plutôt "primordial".

Satz? Il y a phrase, il y a mouvement. Vorsatz, Nachsatz - première et seconde phrases d'un thème. Erster Satz, Allegro-Satz, Andante-Satz, Zweiter Satz, Dritter Satz, Rondo-Satz ... il s'agit des mouvements d'une sonate.

Mais il y a aussi autre chose, structure!

Freier Satz, strenger Satz (structure de contrepoint libre ou stricte), Fugensatz, Choralsatz (ou Choralsetzung s'il s'agit d'une adaptation), Homophoner Satz ... et c'est ici qu'on retrouve aussi Ursatz.

La traduction de l'œuvre de Schenker le traduit par "Structure Fondamentale" ce qui me semble assez exacte. On pourrait aussi l'appeler Structure Staffage - c'est un peu le staffage dans le cadre duquel on élabore la structure finale de la phrase, du thème, du mouvement même (Schenker va si loin que ça) et la mélodie avec. Elle est bien-sûr donc antérieur à même la mélodie.

En aucune mésure ne peut on prétendre que cette méthode reposerait sur plagiat ou donnerait une voie simple à l'ignorant de l'harmonie. Pour la première chose, elle est trop peu spécifique, il y a par chaque Ursatz normalement plusieurs thèmes déjà existants, élaborer à partir de leur Structure Fondamentale commune n'est donc pas plagier un d'entre eux. Pour la seconde chose, il faut savoir l'harmonie ou le contrepoint suffisamment bien pour arriver à son résultat.

Att judar äro bra på musik är ingen hemlighet, men smakmässigt är det ibland ngt ... jag kan intet klaga på Heinrich Schenker eller Georg Riedel, men Czys och vissa typer klezmer äro ngt annat. I mitten av 1940-talet startade Leonard Chess nattklubben Macomba Lounge på South side. Här hängde konstnärer, hallickar, prostituerade och jazzmusiker. Det dröjde inte länge förrän han fick frågan om det gick bra att spela in jazzgrupperna live.

Tillsammans med sin bror Philip köpte han 1947 skivbolaget Aristocrat, som hade kontrakt med blueslegenden Muddy Waters. Tre år senare döpte de om bolaget till Chess Records. Vänskapen mellan Leonard Chess och Muddy Waters blev själva stommen i den musikaliska inriktningen som via elektrisk blues ledde till rock’n’roll.

Blueslåten Rollin’ Stone med Muddy Waters 1950 blev ingen hit men med den tongivande elgitarren och den starka rösten var Chicagobluesen född. Rolling Stones skulle något decennium senare ta sitt namn från den låten.

Hvad var sednare Rolling Stones' stora hit? "I can get no ... satisfaction ..." (rythmiskt icke helt olikt den mkt bättre "We don't need no ... education ..." af Pink Floyd) och från dem kan jag knappast få ngn "satisfaction", nej.

Var det ngn som sade att rocken som judiskt fenomen var ett högerspöke? Och var det ngn som sade att kyskhet och anständighet vore en dygd praktiserad af judiska män - se då efter hvad historien berättar, jag tänker intet citera det.

Mon œuvre peut être utilisée pour se nourrir et accessoirement pour me nourrir. Elle peut aussi être utilisée pour soutenir une bonne cause.

Une bonne cause est par exemple les achats alimentaires ou vestimentaires de la Croix Rouge (je préfère ne pas être impliqué dans les achats de "cet objet odiable vendu en automates devant les pharmacies" - finalement je préfère comme sexe les rélations où cet objet n'a aucune raison d'être, c à d le mariage hétérosexuel).

Une bonne cause est par exemple gagner de quoi loger les nuits Zohra et Hamid dans les auberges de jeunesse, à défaut de les loger chez les sympatiseurs sur sofas, ou encore d'avancer à un marin camérounais les salaires détenus par son capitaine (merci pour me les avoir rappelé, PRÉSENT!).

Une bonne cause est le plantage d'un arbre où l'on souahite finir avec la désertification. Où le soutien donné en des hôpitaux également aux enfants Israëli et Palestiniens, là bas dans la Terre Sainte.

Comme déjà noté, mes compositions ne sont pas là pour aider à faire la quête pour que Messieurs Axel Kahn et Marc Peschanski puissent faire leurs récherches, celui-là sur des cellules souches d'embrya humains , celui-ci sur les neurones des avortés. Les crimes contre l'humanité, style Dr Mengele (s'il a vraiment fait tout lui-même, l'homme qui fut pendu après un kidnapping Mossad, ou s'il était scape-goat pour d'autres docteurs qui se présentaient comme "Mengele" parce qu'ils étaient "eine kleine Menge", je l'ignore: les égarements de l'éthique médicale après 1945 laissent craindre le pire) ne sont en aucune façon une bonne cause. La Téléthon ne l'est pas.

Quand à lutter contre le SIDA; il vaut mieux le faire par abstinence ou fidèlité. Je ne soutiens donc pas Sid-action, non plus.

If a major third divides equally in two major seconds, and a minor third divides unequally in a major and a minor second, it stands to reason that dividing the minor third equally would result in seconds between major and minor.

4:5=major third, divides equally as 8:9:10 two major seconds.
5:6=minor third, divides equally as 10:11:12 two seconds neither major nor minor.

If a scale has both a major and a minor third in the perfect fifth, the minor third will be well divided equally, but the problem is with major third.

Its first half might be 10:11, its second half 22:25. Which is close to 8:9, a little more major as an interval.

To make a scale without octaves or perfect forths, use a minor seventh chord, two perfect fifths (2:3) spaced 5:6 between fundamental and fundamental, as between fiftyh and fifth, and resulting in a 4:5 third between higher fundamental and lower fifth. Then take from each lower end of any third the interval 10:11, you will get another fifth divided by another minor third. The fourths with one exception will be 8:11 or 11:15, two nearly synonymous intervals:

These intervals unlike the fourth of which two add up to minor seventh and unlike tritone of which two add up to octave, add up to a major seventh, it is thus a quarter tone major than a perfect fourth and a quarter tone minor than a tritone. Lowest forth will be a bit minor than a perfect one, not by a quarter tone, but by a comma:

This ought to be the scale that Dalecarlia, maybe Wermland and Norway too, uses so aesthetically. It has been likened to blues scale insofar that the real blue notes are not a halftone but a quarter tone below the third, fifth and seventh of major scale.

If Lyndon LaRouche and Schiller institute do not mind, let 22=220 or 440 Hz and 44=440 or 880 Hz and call both an "A". Singing like a Dalkulla requires a special technique anyway, differring from the classic one.

A - B- - C+ - D+ - E - F+ - G+ - A

Either scale is impossible on a piano, guitar, unless you tune specifically for purpose, or flute, clarinette, unless built specifically for purpose, but quite possible on violin or trombone or human voice.

Mais de ces lettres qui composent les inscriptions des images, comme des autres caractères, on ne peut rien dire, sinon qu'elles sont des signes. Par conséquent elles n'ont de sens qu'à l'adresse d'une intelligence. Les sacrifices, les prostrations et autres rites analogues prouvent la même chose; ils sont des signes de révérence à l'endroit de quelque nature spirituelle.

Les signes sur une partition ou sur une tablature par contre, s'adressent normalement à des intelligences humaines, celles qui doivent ou veulent exécuter les compositions.

Comme pas mal d'autres signes, leur signification est à la fois concrète, comme quand on pronence un A ou un U ou un S, et grammaticale, comme quand on sait que A finit un nominatif ou vocatif singulier de certaines noms féminins, ou nominatif, vocatif ou accusatif pluriel des noms neutres, ou que si on le prolonge il signifie l'ablatif singulier des même noms féminins, mais pas des neutres pluriels. Item que US est la fin de pas mal des noms masculins en nominatif singulier, ou d'autres mots neutres en nominatif, vocatif et accusatif singulier. Et qu'il y a des noms masculins qui finissent comme des féminins, comme NAUTA (marin) et des féminins qui finissent comme les masculins, comme POPULUS (peuplier, les arbres sont féminins en latin).

Un LA, pour moi c'est le signe qui s'écrit en dessous de la ligne moyenne d'une portée en clef de G, ainsi que ses octaves au dessus ou en dessous, c'est le son dont la fréquence est 440 Hz selon certains, 432 Hz selon d'autres, ainsi que les fréquences doubles ou quadruples et c et les fréquences moitié, quart, et c. C'est aussi le son que j'entends comme dernière note d'une mélodie en quelque mode de LA, par exemple l'éolique "Six Ribbons" (voir Jon English) où c'est également la deuxième note (la première en est le MI car la mélodie commence avec une quarte).

C'est la note que sur une guitare bien accordée je trouve la cinquième frette sur la chorde la plus aigue, mais il y a deux autres la, sur la deuxième frette de la chorde de sol, sur la chorde la deuxième plus sombre sans frette.

C'est aussi la note que sur une piano bien accordée je trouve en partant de l'UT au milieu (une taste blanche) en passant par noir-blanc-noir-BLANC-BLANC-noir-blanc-noir à la prochaine BLANCHE. C'est aussi l'octave d'un la en dessous, la septième mineure d'un si, la sixte majeure d'un ut, la quinte majeure d'un ré, la quarte mineure d'un mi, la tierce majeure d'un fa, le ton au dessus d'un sol, si on se tient aux tastes blanches. Les noirs n'ont pas de noms propres, ils sont regardés comme variantes des notes que j'énumère, et si la note en dessous est haussé ou celle au dessus est baissé, mais pas les deux, un intervalle majeure devient mineur, et inversément dans les cas inverses.*

Ce qui devrait suffir pour prouver que mes partitions viennent de mes considérations et s'adressent aux musiciens, et ne viennent pas des démons ni ne s'adressent à eux non plus.

Mais si quelqu'un trouve mes compositions nulles, il est libre à ne pas les jouer. Tant qu'il n'empêche pas d'autres, avec un autre goût, de les jouer.

Les démons n'agissent pas seulement par magie, mais aussi en incitant à la calomnie. BASTA!

Les deux thèmes peuvent être combinés. Dans l'école moderne populaire on les combine avec préférence comme AABA (8-8-12-8 =36 mésures). Pour un "kadrilj" suédois (si on y peut danser quadrille, c'est le même mot et tout aussi la même danse qu'est aussi le Square Dance) on les combine AA-BB, AA-BB rep ad lib (8-8-12-12=40, 80 même 120 mésures). Sans toucher la tonalité.

On peut aussi écrire une sonate, je parle de la forme baroque de Scarlatti, apparenté mais pas identique à celle des Viennois Classiques, alors on les unie en un morceau, celui-ci ayant comme la Quadrille deux parties, chacune répétée, mais chacune aussi ayant les deux thèmes et les déplaçant en tonalité pour la fin de la première moitié et le début de la deuxième: A-B' A-B' A'-(x)-B A'-(x)-B mais la répétition de A en A' n'est pas obligatoire, ça se varie aussi comme: A-B' A-B' C'-B C'-B.

Moral issue: I like the tutorial bit, bit not the bit about "sounding wicked" or doing the "devils sign" a k a corni. While you are at youtube, have a go at this.

Now, he is giving all power chords, all X⁵ as base note + 5 + 8, AND he is putting all base notes on the sixth string. Maybe that is the siplest way to find them. I have some other ideas, though. To start with, the exactly same chords can also be played without putting all base notes on sixth string, like this:

I quit calling one movement things sonatinas, except for guitar, when I found out Scarlatti called them sonatas. If they had two repeats, first from and second back to one main tonality. J'ai joué la guitare pendant environs deux mois, après de ne pas avoir eu le contrat comme professeur de langues (suédois et allemand) renouvellé pour le printemps.

J'ai fait quelques progrès en harmonies des trois chordes aigus, qui sont plus faciles pour la main gauche que par example la G (Sol majeur) standard, qui plie les doigts très durement. Si on joue en 6/8 on peut s'accompagner comme ça.

J'avais pensé ajouter les chordes sombres en chordes sans frets un peu comme ça:

These three most certainly were not. They distilled the quintessence of styles already existing, rather. Excepting SOME parts of Mozart (the least typically 18th C).

Mozart used the kind of cadences and tonality shifts (standardised modulations) you find in Joseph Riepel, basically: as he was tought by his pa, Leopold, who also used ”Riepl”.

One place where Mozart is original is the place in Don Giovanni (I think it was), where the bass ascends chromatically and the chords go: /: Dominant Seventh - Diminished Seventh - 4-6 Minor Chord :/ four times. It has, I think, been reused once. But that Mozart pasage is not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of him.

Take ”Eine Kleine Nachtmusik” or Figaro’s song to Cherubino ... that is much more typically ”the Mozart we love”, and it is as conventional as Ravels Bolero ... or more, since Ravel coupled the Spanish popular dance with an orchestration and harmonisation which at the end of that piece approaches the atonal, at least it is disharmonic and too heavy to dance a Bolero to.

After which she suggested universality, to which I answered:

Universals ... I think major fifth and minor fourth (or at least one of them, as in Andine Peruvian music with three tone scales of C F A or eastern European scales with C F#G A) are real universals. So is the presence of at least one interval smaller than minor fourth - like the major third in Peruvian scale, or the minor and major seconds in that Eastern European one. The octave is less than universal, I think.

So are binary and ternary rhythm, and rhytmicity as such. A Danish composer° said, when you are blasé, you need to rediscover the intervals: (major and minor) third, (minor*) fourth, (major*) fifth.

I am not familiar with that flute work by Mozart, but Riepel gives no very limiting indication about contrast or similarity as such ... have you checked that the contrast does not hide a thematic unity by means of augmentation, diminution, inversion, retrograde or what Reti# calls ”interversion of themes”, like secondary theme being an ”interversion” of adagio theme with principal theme?

As for ”noticeable or reoccurring theme” I think most Adagi (when used as intros to Allegros) have no theme that occurs more than once in the adagio itself ... the reoccurence would make tha adagio too long for an intro ... or is it an adagio as a separate movement, instead of andante?

Have you checked if its harmonic progression is related to the main theme or another one?

Game of avoiding the tritone: From modes via first twelvetone to major and minor

There are two problems in just intonation, as in "octaves and other pure intervals". One I leave aside, it being that to get all major and all but one minor thirds pure, one fifth in the scale needs to be reduced, thus approaching tritone. Which is exactly why pythagorean tuning was preferred, even though the thirds were impure (64:81 rather than 64:80=4:5) The other is so much less necessary, but was felt more keenly: how to avoid the tritone.

The tritone being between final and fourth in lydian, to get a pure (minor) fourth down to final, or up from it, you lower the B to a B flat. The alternative would have been to avoid approaching them: which is so much easier in modes where the tones concerned involve neither final nor dominant. The first accidental was then a B flat. And a lydian (with its original final, not transposed) with a flattened B, is the scale of F major. The major mode transposed from modified "lydian" to pure naturals, called ionic by Glareanus, is of course between lydian and mixolydian:
